How online vouchers work →How long is a café voucher valid?
In Germany a value voucher without its own term falls under the regular three-year limitation period, counted from the end of the year in which it was bought (§§ 195, 199 BGB). A voucher sold in October 2026 is therefore valid until 31 December 2029. Courts have often struck down much shorter terms for value vouchers in standard terms.
Since 2026, food is taxed at 7 % and drinks at 19 %. A voucher for both is therefore usually a multi-purpose voucher: VAT arises when it is redeemed, not when it is sold. Agree the bookkeeping with your tax adviser.
How to sell more vouchers
- Visible at the till. A printed sample voucher on the counter sells better than a line on the menu.
- Fixed amounts. €15, €25 and €50, or an experience like “Breakfast for 2”, make the choice easy.
- Number and list. Enter every number in your voucher tracker so you always know what is still open.
- Start early. Vouchers are the most popular Christmas gift in Germany. Start in early November.
Frequently asked questions
Can I print a shorter validity?
For value vouchers that is risky: courts have often overturned very short terms in standard terms. The statutory three years from the end of the year is the safe choice.
How do I print in colour?
Turn on “Background graphics” or “Print backgrounds” in the print dialog. For DL, choose the matching paper size or cut it from A4.
How is this different from an online voucher?
A printed voucher has to be bought at the counter and noted by you. Online, guests buy around the clock and the balance is deducted automatically when redeemed.
Are my details stored?
No. Everything stays in this browser tab. Only when you use “Suggest a text” do occasion, café name and value go to our server and from there to an AI service (Groq, or Cloudflare Workers AI as a fallback). Nothing is stored even then.
